Calculator
How it works
We convert length and width to feet, multiply by the number of rooms for exact floor area, then apply your waste factor. Boxes needed is the waste-adjusted area divided by box coverage, rounded up so you never see a fraction of a box.
Formula
Floor area = length x width x rooms (all in feet). Area with waste = floor area x (1 + waste%). Boxes needed = ceil(area with waste / box coverage).
Example
A 10 ft x 12 ft room, 1 room, 10% waste, 20 sq ft per box: 120 sq ft exact; 132 sq ft with waste; 6.60 boxes before rounding; buy 7 boxes.
How to measure
Measure the longest length and width of each room. For closets or halls, add them as extra rooms or include them in the larger rectangle. Read box coverage from the carton, not from a generic chart.
FAQ
How many boxes of flooring do I need for a 10x12 room?
At 10% waste and 20 sq ft per box, this calculator recommends 7 boxes. Change box coverage to match the product you will buy.
Why do you round boxes up?
Flooring is sold in whole cartons. A result like 6.6 boxes would leave you short, so we always round up after waste.
What waste percent should I use?
10% is a common default for straight layouts. Use 15% or 20% for diagonals, herringbone, or rooms with many cuts.
